THE DEWBERRY
No trip to Charleston is complete without a stay—or at least a drink—at this historic mid-century hotel. Perched on Mason Square, steps away from
King Street, it’s equal parts tranquil retreat and buzzy hotspot, and has been our favorite hotel in town since it opened back in 2016. (The Dewberry
is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.)
The vibe is chic and cozy (especially the Living Room, a dimly lit, wood-and-leather-appointed haven with hidden nooks and crannies for reading and catching
up with friends), but what keeps us coming back is Citrus Club, the hotel’s rooftop cocktail lounge. “The view of the peninsula from the rooftop is next level,
especially at sunset,” says Elliott Boals, senior sales manager of the Dewberry, who hosted a rooftop soiree while we were in town. And then there are the
amazing apps (don’t miss the oysters and the Salmon Belly Tacos) and citrus-inspired cocktails that are always flowing. Our favorite: the White
Album, a Southern specialty made with honey-distilled gin, spiced lemon, Italian honey liqueur, and coconut.
The hotel has a fleet of Volvos for exploring town (the first US-based Volvo factory is located nearby), and they partner with Barton & Gray to offer boat rides in Hinckley
Talaria boats (which is right up our alley). “That’s one of the best parts about Charleston—you can get a 75-degree day in December and go out on the boat,” says Elliott.
The only problem is that we never want to leave the hotel.
