REAL GOOD PEOPLE

We may be Jeep guys, but we’re also suckers for vintage Land Rovers. So while we were in Charleston, we met up with Greg Shondel, co-founder

of HIMALAYA, a restoration and customization shop breathing new life into iconic Land Rovers in the heart of the city.

HIMALAYA started out as a passion project between Greg and his brother (sound familiar?). “My brother and I are Land Rover enthusiasts, and we

wanted to make something more drivable and serviceable,” Greg tells us while showing off one of his favorite restorations, a 1951 Series I.

Got a Rover that needs some work? Greg and his team of more than 30 pros are the people to see. They handle everything in-house,

bringing the same meticulous craftsmanship to every detail, from the engine to the exterior. Here’s how Greg describes the process: “We

always start with an old, original Land Rover. Our team painstakingly strips it down, then rebuilds it using a combination of new and original

parts. We keep as much of the vehicle’s soul as possible while replacing the crucial systems that make it reliable and drivable.”

As beautiful as these restored Land Rovers are to look at, he doesn’t want them just sitting in the garage.

“We want people out enjoying them, filling them with kids, dogs and gear and heading off to do something fun.”
