The Bitter End Yacht Club Pro Am Regatta allows spectators, guests and sailors the opportunity to rub elbows and swap stories with some of the legends of sailing. During our stay, we were lucky enough to catch up with one of sailing's most enthusiastic pioneers, Butch Ulmer of UK-Halsey Sailmakers. Butch has been making waves in the sailing industry for over 30 years after taking over the family business his father started. Producing some of the most technical sails around, these guys have always been just as committed to helping you look good out on the water as we are.

Butch is still very involved with the company, though these days he spends as much time at the helm recreationally as professionally. An outspoken spokesman for the sport he's dedicated his life to, he's recently set his sails on sharing his passion and passing his knowledge on to future generations of skippers. After spending years racing every kind of sailboat imaginable, Butch clearly knows what he's doing, but the custom vineyard vinesĀ® polos he wears every day, accumulated from all the races he's participated in, lend him that extra dash of credibility. In fact, we just made him a fresh batch for UK-Halsey Sailmakers.

With a name like Butch and eight years in the US Navy behind him, you'd expect a gruff, no-nonsense kind of guy, but it doesn't take five minutes to realize he's just a genuine fella with a heart of gold. And that's what we love about him.
