Whale Tales
Charlie Smith is one of those lucky individuals allowed to wear our kind of suit to work every day-a bathing suit. When he goes to the office, he heads for the beach. His desk chair, if you could even call it that, is a beach chair, but you'll rarely find him sitting down.
Charlie found his ticket to paradise through his passion for all things boarding-kiteboarding, wakeboarding, surfboarding. Originally from the Turkish side of Cyprus, he rode waves all over the world as a professional windsurfer before settling down on Necker Island, owned by one of our idols, Richard Branson. We still remember our parents visiting and writing about Necker when we were growing up…but enough about us.
These days Charlie teaches visiting guests how to-for lack of a better description-be like him out on the water. A typical day might involve cruising around the island, giving a wakeboarding lesson and hosting an evening cruise. And, well, when your job and your hobbies are one and the same, you know you have a good thing going.
We caught up with Charlie as he was preparing to go out for a morning sail. We asked him to get out there and show us how it's done….Needless to say, that's the last we saw of Charlie.
