Whale Tales
Gordo & Nathalie Overing have made paradise their home for the past 20 years. Sweethearts since high school, they moved from Canada together after their competition days as Olympic swimmers came to an end. Gordo continued to splash around as water sports director at The Bitter End Yacht Club, and Nathalie became a buyer for the club's store, where she quickly gave our gear a home. (We like to think this had something to do with Gordo's switch from swim briefs-he used to model them-to Chappy Trunks, but we can't be sure.)
Two kids later, the Overings were teetering on the brink of packing it up to head back north of the border when they received an offer they simply couldn't refuse-the chance to become general managers of Richard Branson's private Caribbean retreat, Necker Island. Now, overseeing the property's 74 acres of relatively untouched coastline, they're likely the first smiling faces guests see from the boat as they arrive. Daily swimming and windsurfing keep them feeling young, but as the only grown-ups on island (other than the guests and Richard, when he's there), they've become surrogate parents to the rest of the island's staff, like Charlie and Lucy.
As the children of travel writers who had the opportunity to meet our fair share of GM's growing up, we can attest that no one has it as good as these guys. But living in this island oasis hasn't gone to their heads-they say they wake up every morning wondering how their life ended up so good.
