Most everyone who has ever had the pleasure of floating through Edgartown Harbor knows Mike Hathaway. And no one who has ever had the pleasure of meeting the man has ever had anything but nice things to say about him: Mike's just a real, genuine, salt-of-the-earth kind of guy, perhaps as a result of spending so much time in, on or around saltwater.

Mike works in the Harbormaster's Office. He has dedicated the greater part of his life to keeping our waters safe, and in doing so has become an island institution as much as the Edgartown Lighthouse he passes each morning. Fixtures on the waterfront ourselves, we got to know Mike the way most people do-through casual conversations shouted from one boater to another.

In one such exchange, while out on our flats boat, Mike commented to Ian on how much he liked his steering wheel, how small it was and how the attached knob made it so easy to maneuver. Ian let him take it for a spin and he's been "borrowing" it ever since. We'd ask for it back, but we figure anything that helps Mike do his job better helps further protect the waters we love. At least that's what we tell ourselves.
