Whale Tales

vineyard vines, wedding wednesday

We met… We’re both originally from New England (myself from RI & Shane CT), but our paths didn’t cross until we had both moved out West and were living in Southern California.

The proposal… Shane proposed to me while we were out for cocktails in Newport Beach, CA. While we had been discussing the idea of getting engaged, the timing of the proposal came as a complete shock to me. It was also the anniversary of my mother in-laws death, which made it bittersweet. My husband said he wanted that day to be remembered as a happy day from now on.

The wedding venue … Our wedding took place last summer (6/28/13) at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach, CA.

We incorporated VV into our special day by…. Born and raised in New England, we both wanted to incorporate elements of home into our wedding. While we decided to have our wedding in Southern CA, we made sure we brought the East Coast vibe and style we had both grown up with over to Cali for our special day. We knew the VV Classic Twill Club Pants in rhubarb, paired with navy blazers and penny loafers was the perfect look for our day. I felt like I was back home in Newport, RI and not Newport Beach, CA, as that is a staple look in New England! Between our preppy attire and the nautical New England elements we incorporated into our wedding, we both felt right at home.

Couple’s name… Casey and Joel

We met… Mutual friends introduced us at a party in Gramercy Park, New York City.

The proposal… A surprise trip to Nantucket, our favorite place in the world. After a bike ride to Madaket Beach, Joel proposed while we watched the sunset over the harbor from White Elephant. Celebrations continued afterwards with dinner at the best restaurant on the island, Toppers.

The wedding was … at Hans Fahden Vineyard in Calistoga, Napa Valley, on August 9, 2013. The ceremony was in a garden surrounded by vineyards and Diamond Mountain, followed by dinner in a candle illuminated wine cave.

We incorporated VV into our special day by…. Joel’s groomsmen and the fathers all wore the Sailboat Cummerbund Set… a nod to our ACK engagement. The pale green color weaved perfectly into the natural setting. (Shout out to our amazing friend Meg who works at VV HQ!)

Special thanks to our photographer Elisabeth Millay who captured our special day!

We tied the knot… In Charlotte, NC on June 29, 2013. We were married at Saint Luke’s Catholic Church in Mint Hill at 10AM and had a brunch reception at Firethorne County Club. We really enjoyed the laid back feel that a morning wedding and brunch reception provided.

We incorporated VV into our day by… My husband is a big baseball fan and not so much a big wedding planner. My mom and I planned most of the wedding and would ask his opinion when we narrowed something down to two choices. When it came time to pick a tie, my husband voiced his opinion that he wanted a baseball tie!  I immediately thought of vineyard vines. With it’s classic New England vibe (we reside in Boston), and southern charm appeal, vineyard vines fit into our wedding aesthetic and epitomized our lifestyle. My husband wore the pink Yankees Logo Tie and his groomsmen wore the navy Baseball Ties.

Our first dance was… “All I want is you,” by Tristan Prettyman. I am a teacher, and a parent of one of my students choreographed a dance for us to the song! It was a special, intimate moment. We still remember the dance moves!

Our EDSFTG moment was when… The brunch reception ended at 3PM, and that night, our wedding guests joined us for a pool party at my parent’s clubhouse pool. We served classic Carolina BBQ,  played lawn games and ended the night with a visit from an ice cream truck! As we took a step back, my husband and I realized how lucky we were to be surrounded by our closest family and friends. Not only did we get to celebrate with them at the reception, but we got to spend quality one-on-one time with every guest at the pool party. Everyone was celebrating into the wee hours of the morning, including my 85 and 89 year old grandmas (one wore my veil the whole night!). This is something we will always cherish.

Then we jetted off to… Aruba for some R&R!

Don’t forget dad!

Say cheese!

John and Molly Baxter are sailors but more importantly, long time friends of VV. You could say they’re a force to be reckoned with out on the water traveling the globe, winning races and bringing the whale with them on all of their adventures.

They check in with us every once in a while, letting us know how they’re doing and just how much fun they’re having. Needless to say, we’re jealous… but proud as ever of our Team VV! Here’s their latest recap:

We just returned from St. Maarten where we competed on the Gunboat 62 Elvis in the Heineken Regatta.  We won our class, sailing against five other Gunboats—the first time assembling that many of these high performance carbon fiber catamarans.  We won all three races and were able to sport our favorite VV summer gear for the first time in a while!  Attached are a few pictures after the last day of sailing. We’re looking forward to the Stanley Bell Regatta in Larchmont, NY and then we’ll be setting sail for Newport Beach, CA for the Baldwin Cup. Thanks vineyard vines for all of your support!
